In Parashat Emor the concept of the calendar and the holiday celebrations are emphasized. We read in Leviticus 23:2:"These are My fixed times, the fixed times of the Lord, which you shall proclaim as sacred occasions." What follows is a list of sacred occasions beginning with Shabbat and listing many other Jewish holidays. The idea of Jewish time or sacred time is a theme in this parashah and in Judaism.
Creating sacred time and recognizing Jewish time is incredibly important. I am excited to share a new, intergenerational initiative in our synagogue. Jill Lipson, Sheira Schlair, and Ruth Mindick are starting a Women's Rosh Chodesh group to begin around Rosh Hashanah in September. The group will gather together monthly at group members' homes, coinciding with Rosh Chodesh, to engage in Jewish learning. Each session will have a different topic.
This is a group for women, run by women. It is open to synagogue members and to other women in your networks. I will serve as a mentor to the group and to the individual facilitators. If you have any questions, please contact Jill Lipson at email@example.com . If you would like to join this group, please let Helaine know so that we can add you to our email group. You can contact her at firstname.lastname@example.org or 845-358-3767. We envision that the group will meet for about two hours on an evening once a month. There will be a planning meeting prior to September.
